My lovely wife is a music geek. A hardcore music geek.

In the not-quite-two-weeks since she moved down to Atlanta, she entered a contest sponsored the cool local radio station, Dave FM, 190 times, in an effort to win tickets to an intimate lunchtime concert with Aimee Mann. Fortunately, it worked! We sat in the front row of a ~100 person crowd and enjoyed an intimate show like I’ve only seen from friends.

That picture is from the photographer for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, who crawled on the floor in front of us for her entire set. That is exactly what she looked like from the point of view of my left knee. Fortunately for him, her set was short. We took some phone pictures, but I can’t seem to get them successfully ported to anywhere else but my phone. Next time you see me, ask, and I’ll show them to you.

Mann’s set was short but fun. Her intelligent sense of humor shines through beautifully. And her drummer mostly played small baskets filled with something rattley. I loved watching him experiment with different sounds — tapping the basket on his knee, tapping the basket with his hand, tapping his hand with the basket, tapping one basket on the knee and shaking another basket with his hand….

Ben Lee was a charming opening act. He invited "my friend Lara" onstage with him. Lara is a pixie-like waif who played a child’s toy piano — which, by the way, she ROCKED. Her stage presence was awkward, but sweetly enthusiastic. And Ben is a good singer-songwriter-guy-with-a-guitar.

And, the lunch was delicious.

Jill, and JB, the guy who sat with us at our front row table, are quite clear that the pregnancy has affected my taste buds. Since the food looked like veggies & ranch dip, pita bread & hummus, and grapes, I suspect they’re right.
