Pregnancy Yucks
Posted by Liza under Pregnancy
Until this week, I’ve been really lucky in this pregnancy, at least in terms of being sick.
That went through a big change over the last week. YUCK-O. Brushing my teeth has become nearly unbearable as a gag reflex trigger.
It started out the toothpaste. So I tried using less. No good. Then I thought maybe I would floss and use a paste-free toothbrush. Still puking, now from the mint in the floss AND the action of the toothbrush.
I’m really not willing to give up brushing my teeth. But at the same time, this is awful.
Any suggestions?
BTW, I use Tom’s of Maine toothpaste, but a mainstream saccharine-minty floss, and listerine knock-off mouthwash. I’ve been afraid to use the mouthwash since I started being sick from the rest of my dental hygiene routine.

I’ve never been pregnant, so this advice should just carry *tons* of weight, but it sounds as though both the strong flavors and the movement are trigging nausea. You might try unflavored floss and - this will be weird - finding a at a pet store one of those dog toothcleaners. It looks like one of those rubber finger tips that librarians used to use. Put it on your finger, apply toothpaste (or baking soda), and rub your teeth clean. Hope you feel better soon!
