Super Bowl Baby?
Posted by Liza under Pregnancy
If I understood this article summary posted by Emilin & Brooke correctly, the more accurate prediction of my due date should work out to being Sunday, February 5, not Friday, February 3.
I think that’s correct.
And it’s especially funny to me for several reasons:
- February 5 is a big birthday in my family. My late uncle was born on that date, as were two of his grandchildren. (And one of those little ones, born last year, was ~2 months early. On his sister’s birthday, no less.)
- My lovely wife used to work in a high-ranking managerial capacity for an NFL football team. She worked for them for nearly 8 (thankless) years.
- She has also worked at the Super Bowl a number of times, and several of her buddies were a tad cranky that she could not come work there again this year, because of my due date. (Personally, I suspect she was relieved to have a good excuse not to go to Detroit to work, probably at least partially outdoors, in February.)
- I, on the other hand, used to schedule major grocery shopping trips during the Super Bowl. You’d be amazed how quiet the grocery store is then. It’s even better than going to the grocery store in the pouring rain.
- Last, but not least, I’ve had a "Sunday the 5th" feeling for awhile now. And my intuition has been pretty accurate in this pregnancy, with the notable exception of my having been completely convinced that I failed to conceive — prior to the chocolate chip pancakes with a side of broccoli incident. For example, I knew he was a boy at least a month before the ultrasound where we got to see proof.

A few years ago there was a website you could visit called the Conflict Catcher. Whatever sporting event you can’t miss, the Catcher would advise you on what days to avoid conception.
How does Jill feel about this? Was she planning (like Karen and I are) to be glued to the screen for the big game?

She *was* anticipating being in Detroit, working the game.
Last year she did something involving transportation management in JAX. So there was no watching the game, sadly for her, but there was a week of working long hours and hanging out with her sports event operations geek friends.
But yeah, I imagine that if Smudge hasn’t put in his appearance yet, the game will probably be on.

Wouldn’t that be great? The 5th is only a week away. I hope your right on this one!

If he does pop his head out on gameday I think you should name him after the game’s MVP. Well, maybe his middle name.
That’s a story he could tell forever. “My middle name is Jerome because the day I was born Jerome “The Bus” Bettis ran for 200 yards and scored 2 TDs.”
But that’s not going to happen, is it?

Yes! Let’s name ‘Lil Smudge “Bus”!
Yes, it is the Super Bowl I’m not working that features *both* the Rolling Stones (my favorite band) AND Stevie Wonder. Maybe we’ll be having our own Lil “Mother’s Little Helper” on that day.

Don’t you watch football with your wife?

Hmmm… the technical answer to that is yes, at least sometimes. My mom also came out as a football fan about 10 years ago, and so I’ve also watched it with her, and in Madison, I even watched semi-regularly.
But I’m just not good with names. Much to the amusement of my wife.
