Most states have residency requirements before you can do things like get married or divorced, or adopt children. That said, nothing is “off the table” right now. We are looking at every non-ridiculous option. And the definition of non-ridiculous is pretty broad. We don’t know what we’re going to do yet.

I’m weighing in late but haven’t checked your blog in a while and had to comment. I can’t believe this is happening in 2006! Way back about 1990 in California, I volunteered at the Alliance for Childrens Rights and they handled a similar case with two men. One was a stay at home dad and he was not allowed to adopt, in part because he had no income but it came down to discrimination. The case had a good outcome and both men became legal dads so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you two, too. Ugh, when you think about it Brad Pitt can adopt Angelina Jolie’s adopted children and that’s not a problem but this is?!?!?! Could you possibly do the adoption in a different state?

Liza and Jill, I am so, so sorry. It breaks my heart that some people are discriminated against in this way, and that it’s not only legal but condoned by some groups.

I hope your lawyer is able to do something else. You are a FAMILY, dammit, and should be recognized as such.
