How to Torture a Native Wisconsonian
Posted by Liza under Personal, The Real Live Boy
If you enlarge any of the pictures in the previous post, especially the one focused on his hands, you can see that The King has a rash on his face.
We thought it was just baby acne, but when it spread over his neck and down his shoulders, as well as into his hair, we thought we should go get it checked out.
The Pediatrician thinks that some of it looks like baby acne, but that some of it looks more like an allergic reaction to milk protein.
Apparently, this is not unusual in small babies, and most grow out of it. However, they recommend that Mommy quit eating milk products. Mommy will have to be off of all milk products for 2-3 weeks before we’ll be able to tell if this is helping.
Milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and ice cream account for something like half Mommy’s caloric intake most days. Probably more. This normally makes Mommy very happy.
What the hell is Mommy going to eat?
Vegan & lactose intolerant friends, I need your recommendations. Right now, I’m eating a bowl of rice and carrots, and feeling cranky. A trip to the grocery store will have to happen in the next 24 hours.
PS This doesn’t appear to have had an impact on his eating or his growth. The King officially weighs 11 lbs, 1.4 oz.

EGADS! (gasp!) Aaack! And I’m not even a wisconian. You poor thing!
Ok, there’s a really great vegan spread called, umm, crap! no that’s not the name, why can’t I remember the name! It’s got the word earth in the title. It’s yummier than real butter, I promise. And it bakes up real nice.
Hummus. Lots and lots of hummus (that is if you like hummus)
Does goat milk count?
Sorry, I’m not helping much, I’m still in sypmathetic shock.

EARTH BALANCE
That’s the name of the yummy vegan butter stuff. AND there’s no transfats.

Well, as your Lactose Intolerant sister I highly recommend the brand Lactaid - They make milk and other dairy products including ice cream! I also believe they make cheese, but I’ve never bought it. I DO however eat Soy cheese… which I realize is illegal in Wisconsin, but that’s why I moved to New York.
And while I have learned you don’t like Soy Milk, I suggest Chocolate or Vanilla flavored Rice Milk or Rice Dream (its kind of like Ice Cream)
Welcome to my world.

I’ve been dairy-free for a couple of weeks now, experimenting to deal with Levi’s eczema. I highly recommend rice dream, both the milk and the ice cream. Beware that products that are lactose-free are not necessarily free of milk protein, which is supposedly the culprit in these infant allergies. There are some breads that don’t have milk protein in them, but most do, so you have to be careful. I’m looking on the bright side: I just got back into my favorite Lucky jeans yesterday, I’m sure in part by the restrictive diet.

Oh god, not bread too. Thanks for the warning, Melissa, but now I’m REALLY depressed. And I have nothing left to eat. Thank god I bought potatos at the grocery store. Mmmm. Dry potatos. *sniff*
I think goat is allowed, but I’ve never liked goat cheese. Does the milk have a similar tang to it?
Sadly, Anna, Lactaid products still contain milk protein.

Oh yeah, and I made nachos tonight with something called “veggie shreds - cheddar flavor” which was amazingly more like plastic than regular “dairy” american cheese.

um, yeah. Goats milk and goats yoghurt tast amazingly like goats cheest. Part of their appeal. Urm, that is if you like goat’s cheese.
You’re having a horrible day.

What about tofu and other soy products? Amy’s brand frozen foods has a bunch of non-dairy stuff, and Morningstar fake chicken things are yummy.
I feel for you, though. What a bummer.

my favorite non-dairy milk is “silk” brand soy milk. they too have a chocolate flavor that is delicious. i like it better than rice milk.
silk also makes soy yogurt.
my favorite soy cheese is “veganrella” brand. others insist that “follow your heart” is better, so you can make up your own mind. i also like the tofutti prepackaged slices.
tell us what your favorite dairy foods are and i can better recommend alternatives.

It can be depressing to have to get rid of things you love to eat. I will try to think of some fitting recipes for you over the next few days. Hang in there!

Make a Silk soymilk smoothie
Light vanilla silk (if you go with the light vanilla it tastes shockingly like skim milk, fyi)
1 chopped mango
1 chopped peach
1 banana
orange juice (try freezing in a ice cube tray)
or try the silk with bananas and a nut butter (i like almond)
________
also try tofutti ice cream (the sandwiches are called tofutti cuties!)

the best way to make a smoothie is with frozen fruit (including a frozen banana, it’s a must for a smoothie), soy milk (try chocolate!) and NO JUICE. that’s how it comes out creamy and thick like a milkshake. trust me, i’m a smoothie expert. my favorite smoothie combo lately is frozen banana/frozen peaches/frozen strawberries/chocolate soy milk. yum!
oh, and it’s only the highly processed breads that have milk proteins in them. if you buy bread fresh from whole foods or from a real bakery most won’t have any dairy in them. and the bread tastes better and is better for you than that processed shit.

oh, and instead of only trying to substitute “fake dairy” for the dairy in your diet, try to satisfy those same cravings in other ways. for instance, avocado adds a creamy fattiness to sandwiches without cheese. instead of finding a fake cheese to snack on with crackers (you won’t find one anyway) try a white bean and rosemary dip with crackers. the book saucy vegetarian by jo stepaniak has a lot of things like dips and sauces without dairy to help you find new ways to make meals flavorful without dairy. so you don’t have to sit there and suffer over plain carrots and rice.
also, check out the recipe i posted on the dc metblog for vegan lasagne!
