Reading Again
Posted by Liza under Books, The Real Live Boy
During the whole month of February, I think I managed to read 1.5 books. Both of them re-reads, while I was in the hospital, trapped in bed, waiting for The King to make his appearance. (Tamora Pierce’s Trickster’s Choice, and part of Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon.)
March started off much the same. Nursing has been a 2-handed project most of the time, so I’ve wound up watching WAY MORE TV than I normally watch.
Until the last week. Nursing still takes 2 hands to get started, and occasionally, when The King gets distracted. But if I can stand the interruptions (and I can), I can read and nurse at the same time. So far, I’ve re-read Dorothy Sayers’ Gaudy Night and Busman’s Honeymoon. I think I need to stick to small paperback novels for now, and perhaps even to re-reads. But I am still a happy camper!
And last night, I tried nursing while laying down (lying down?) and IT WORKED. Not only was it less disruptive of my sleep — I couldn’t exactly sleep while doing it, but I could rest and doze — it also seemed to disrupt The King less. He went back to sleep in his bassinet more easily too!!! Thanks, Jean!
Fruit & Veg Count, 3/13: None. Unless the buckets of processed soy products count. But I don’t think they should. The problem is that except for bananas, fruit & veg take preparation, and I’m mostly eating entire meals in less than 5 minutes, including prep time. I’m going to go have a banana.

ok, now we are talking my area of expertise here!
veggie-laden meals that take 5 minutes to prep and eat:
1. put frozen veggies in a bowl or large mug, nuke for 1 minute. fill bowl or mug with Imagine boxed creamy broccoli soup (or flavor of your choice) and nuke for another minute and a half. eat in 2.5 minutes or one-handed while nursing.
2. boil 1.5 cups of water (1 min.), add Thai Kitchen soup package (rice noodles plus soup powder) and frozen veggies and simmer for 1.5 min. eat in 2.5 minutes.
3. transfer amy’s non-dairy pot pie to an oven safe bowl and nuke for one minute. transfer entire bowl to toaster and bake for 2 minutes. while pot pie is baking, fill paper bowl that pot pie came in with frozen veggies and nuke for about a minute and a half. dump veggies on top of pot pie and add salt to serve. this you only have 2 minutes to eat.
3. open bag of pre-cut and washed broccoli rabe from the supermarket, pour into a bowl. add nate’s or trader joe’s brand frozen meatless meatballs. nuke for 2 minutes. drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle on some salt and pepper, add some pre-chopped garlic from jar (30 seconds total). eat in 2.5 minutes.

oops, i meant nuke the amy’s pot pie for 2 minutes, bake for 1 min. nuke the veggies while the pot pie is baking.

Excellent! I was getting pretty sick of the peanut-free Luna bar flavors I’ve been eating as a staple food for the last few days.

I’m glad the lying down worked for you! It was so great to get lying down time when I could just relax. And, it gets easier and easier. My mom swears by this blender she bought at Costco–she pops in whole cut veggies (kale, tomatoes, carrots, etc.), some yogurt, soy beans, whatever fruit that’s slightly soft and blends it all. It’s not a juicer because you get all the fiber, too. I think she said it as about $400 but she’s super frugal and she loves it so I figure it must be worth the price. Drinking is an easy way to get in lots of vitamins.

You should check out audible.com for audio books. They are perfect for breastfeeding.

I tried the side-lying breastfeeding, but was scared of falling asleep and rolling over Lilly. For some reason, even though I never feed her in bed, everytime I move in my sleep, I wake up to make sure Lilly isn’t there next to me. Strange huh?
