Ad Hoc Non-Dairy Food Reviews
Posted by Liza under Opinion
In the course of the last 10 days, I’ve tried 4 kinds of frozen non-dairy desert, 4 kinds of non-dairy cheese, and 5 kinds of non-dairy "milk." Here they are rated on a scale of 1-10, with comments. Of course these are my opinions only — your mileage may vary.
Frozen Deserts:
Rice Dream - 6. I didn’t like the texture.
Purely Decadent Soy Delicious - 7. Better than rice dream, but still more like "low-cal" dairy ice cream.
Tofutti - 8. I liked it, it had the best texture while in your mouth. But it had a sort of weird aftertaste.
Celestial Seasonings - 9. The rice dream people should try to replicate whatever it is that their partners the celestial seasonings people are doing differently. The texture was equal to grocery store ice cream (although not premium ice cream), and the flavor was interesting and rich.
"Cheeze"
Veggie Slices, American-Style - 3
Veggie Slices, Provalone-Style - 3
Veggie Slices, Cheddar-Style - 4
Veggie Shreds, Parm/Mozz/Romano Blend - 2. Repulsive. Nearly inedible. The only reason they aren’t a 1 is that they didn’t taste as bad as they smelled.
It all seemed more like plastic than food. Bland and unappetizing.
"Milk"
Silk Chocolate - 7. I’m not wild about the texture, but it isn’t bad.
Silk Chocolate Light - 8. I like the light version better. Which is unusual for me — the only other food I’ve noticed that with is triskets. Oh, and neufchatel cheese over regular cream cheese. And nice chocolate flavor.
Edensoy Light Vanilla - 7. Pretty good as a coffee "creamer."
Rice Dream Vanilla - 5. I don’t like the texture, or the flavor of the vanilla. It tastes too fake, like an over-syruped flavored latte.
Edensoy Regular - 8. I like it as a coffee creamer and as a liquid for cooking hot cereal.
I have some almond milk and another rice milk to try. But I suspect that I won’t be buying any more rice-based "milk" products.
Fruit & Veg Update From Yesterday: I also had half an avocado yesterday, which I forgot to list previously.

Here’s a nice milky drink.
Blend water, raw skinless almonds (soak them in water for a few hours to soften them), and some pitless dates together. It’s a nice sweet non-milk.

Hello, I’ve been reading your site from time to time during my pregnancy. I just had my baby girl a week ago after a 37 week long pregnancy. I’m trying to breastfeed and I know you had some problems with milk and feeding… do other foods you eat affect the King’s disposition?

Not that I’ve noticed. I haven’t given up my two cups of coffee in the morning — which I also didn’t give up while pregnant. Even that doesn’t seem to have an effect on him.
Good luck with your breastfeeding!

I am so with you on the dairy free train. I’m actually mostly grooving with it now; I don’t know how I’d give up milk though! The folks look at me really funny when I order bacon but ask if there’s milk/dairy in other items.
Have you tried Pacific’s brand of soy milk? Or the Tofutti “Cuties”? I also like Tofutti’s “sour cream”. I avoid the vegan “cheez” because it’s too much like pasty cardboard.
And good luck with your adoption stuff, I just don’t understand a world where this is even a debate…
