Breastmilk = Miracle Drug
Posted by Liza under The Real Live Boy
While we were still at the hospital, one of the nursery nurses — I think it was our favorite, Suzanne — told us that breastmilk remains full of valuable antibodies, and that she was once advised to cure her son’s eye infection by squirting breastmilk into his eye a few times a day until it cleared up.
We thought that was a little weird, and when The King got an eye infection, we went to the pediatrician and got an antibiotic ointment instead.
But the rash on his poor little face got so red and angry, and pardon me, but crusty — late Friday, when we’d have no access to the pediatrician until Monday.
So I decided to try wiping his cheeks with milk after he eats. He gets it all over his chin anyway, just from eating and drooling, so I figured it couldn’t hurt his little face. And you know what? It appears to be working! The rash looks a lot less red and angry, especially on the side where I started the experiment, which has had 2 more applications than the other side.
I’m still going to go to the pediatrican’s office with him tomorrow, but at least it looks less painful and itchy now. (Of course, it could just be time. But like I said, I’m sure the breastmilk can’t be hurting him.)
None of this stopped him from shrieking from roughly 4 am to 5:30. Luckily, Jill got up with him, and after he ate at 5:30, he slept from 6-8:30 am.
Fruit & Veg Count, 3/18: We went for all-american comfort food yesterday and had mixed veggies, tater-tots, and burgers for dinner. I can’t remember anything I ate earlier in the day, other than an absolute ton of apple juice.

Liza,
As a mom, this will come more and more instinctively, but you can also spit on him, or lick him, and have a similar, but likely less potent, anti-microbial effect. This will come in handy more after you are done lactating.

That same thing happened to me, too! I thought the lactation consultant was off at first. Plus, she told us to use it on any cuts he had (from his fingernails early on) and it seemed to heal really quickly! As a disclaimer, my friend who’s an opthamalogist said it’s not sterile once it hits other surfaces. But, it was amazing how well it worked. We joked about bottling it and selling it!
