What Happened?
Posted by Liza under The Real Live Boy
What happened to my good sleeper, Noah?
I blame the thrill of rolling over. Although Noah can turn over both from back to tummy and tummy to back, he’s only made it from tummy to back once twice (it also happened yesterday at school) so far. But back to tummy? That’s some exciting stuff! Worth waking up in the middle of the night to practice.
Only here’s the thing. Once on his tummy, getting back onto his back is hard. Frustrating, even! So then Noah gets all worked up into a tizzy that requires half an hour or more of calming midnight snack.
Keep practicing that tummy to back part, Noah. Please!!! Mommy is not so good with 2:30 am.

i used to do that when i was a baby, turn over onto my stomach and then cry because i couldn’t turn back. this is probably considered child abuse now, but what my parents did is safety pin my sleeper to the crib mattress so i couldn’t “practice” turning over.

Hey! Shepherd’s going through the same stuff! Although his latest thing is back to tummy… and pushing his legs really hard, cornering him in the corner of the crib. The past 2 nights I’ve gotten little or no sleep… hang in there…

I got pointed to a really helpful article on Kellymom.com, which basically said “4 month olds are incredibly distractable, which is probably why they aren’t eating well during the day and instead waking up hungry in the middle of the night.”

And in the cases of Noah, Shepherd, and Jen back in the day, are entertaining themselves when they wake up, but then getting stuck.
The safety pin thing is very funny! We got some “sleeping blocks” as a shower gift, little 3 inch/side x 12 inch long triangular blocks, velcroed to a piece of cloth that you can put the baby down between to keep him from rolling over.
I’m going to try low-distraction locations for eating in the evening first.

I think the safety pin is a clever idea! Velcro could be the modern day equivalent of it. I used to joke that I was going to get a velcro wall and a suit for my kids so I could pop them up there if I needed a minute to myself.

It is very frustrating when they do that. You want them to roll over, but until they get it down , you find yourself rolling them over all the time. Very Fun!

That’s our life right now! EVERY time he rolled over last night, he started to cry immediately. We rolled him back. 2 minutes later, he’d roll over again. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
