Peter Mulvey: Lucky CrazyMixedUp CD Group
Posted by Liza under Personal
Are there any other NPR junkies out there?
All Things Considered featured a +7 minute story on singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey today. Some of his current music and other projects can be heard in the story, along with the Internet-driven loyalty of some of his fans, and the bizarreness of the economics of being an indie artist.
Many of you who know me in real life also know Peter in real life, and we’ve known each other for more than 20 years. (Gulp!) If you missed it and you miss him, listen online, it’s vintage Peter.
And those of you on the CrazyMixedUp CD Group Listserv should have gotten our extremely extremely late CD in the mail this week. The final track is the perfect “Peter Mulvey & Internet Friends” song, his cover of the 1930s ragtime You Meet The Nicest People (In Your Dreams).
Apropos of nothing, that song is neither the one he sang at our wedding, If I Were, originally a duet with Pamela Means (back in ancient history when Pamela still lived in Milwaukee and wasn’t out), nor my favorite, Shirt, which you can check out on Peter’s site. But it fit best on an Internet-friends mix. ![]()
And it is just always cool and exciting and wonderful when you get to hear your friends on the radio. My parents called every phone we own TWICE to tell us. (Isn’t that sweet? Did you friends from way back when know that my parents like you that much? They do! It isn’t just Peter.)

I love hearing stuff about Peter through the eyes of people who dont know him like we do. I was sitting in my office one day a while back and a co-worker was talking to another co-worker about music. All I heard was “You should really listen to this guy named Peter Mulvey! His music is great and his songwriting is fantastic” I just smiled in my cube.

Holy crap! I had no idea about this! Young Hunter shoulda sent out an e-mail or something. Thank you for pointing it out. He was very Peter-y. Ya know, how all these little observations sound so rehearsed but, no, he really talks that introspectively all the time. Since this was his second feature on weekend edition, I’m wondering when more radio shows start playing his records, like that damn World Cafe dude.

So back in early 2002 I worked on a short Bob Dylan tour. After lunch I stepped into the arena floor just as the sound guys were starting their check. I remember thinking to myself “Hey, I haven’t heard this tune in a while..” then I realized it was Peter. I think I dropped him a line to let him know he opened for Dylan that day.

I am so glad I saw Peter play in Dublin and that we got a chance to talk afterwards. It was a few years ago now but the show really stayed with me, *and* I got to introduce the mister to a genuine Milwaukee talent!

Cool. I didn’t hear the NPR piece but will look forward to hearing your CD. I love disovering new artists. I heard Pamela Means at Tomboygirl Fest a few years ago–she was great.

Heeehee! Pamela is amazing.
When I first heard her, Peter and Dave and Scott were raving about this amazing and gorgeous musician Peter had been doing a few gigs with around Milwaukee. I think all “the guys” had a crush on her.
So I went to a gig, and she was amazing, and hot, and OBVIOUSLY a dyke. The audience was full of lesbians, and I really didn’t think they were there for Peter.
Of course I had to be a little obnoxious about it, so I said to the guys, “sorry, none of you have a chance. She’s a dyke.”
They argued with me, convinced that I was full of shit, and I think Peter even convinced Pamela to go out on like 1 date.
Then Peter moved to Boston. Pamela came for a visit and met a girl on her very first night there. None of the Milwaukee gang saw her for the rest of her trip, except when she and her new gf came by on their way to the airport to get Pamela’s bag.
At least, that’s how I heard the end of the story.

I’ve always thought Peter should do a duet with Edie Carey- he on “The Trouble with Poets” and she on “Be a Poet about it”
They’re even in the same key! : )
I’ll listen online.

That would be awesome!
I almost put “The Trouble with Poets” on the mix cd, but then I worried that our resident poet might not hear it the same way I do. And I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings with the CD!
