We have had a much too exciting day already. And yet, it isn’t even noon.

Noah decided that just after 3 was a fine time to wake up for the day, much to my chagrin. In what turned out to be a very bad plan, I kept trying to nurse him back to sleep. He was obviously tired, alternating between sitting up and grinning and clapping, and curling up against my chest.

At 4 am, as he started to doze off, some charming soul called our house. Of course Noah reacted to the phone ringing and reawakened.

At 4:26 am, Noah figured out how to get me to turn on the lights and really make the morning exciting: projectile vomit!

I swear to god, he projectile-vomited a quart of milk. All over himself, me, the chair, his Ice Bat doll, the carpet, and some random other toys that were in the line of fire.

I yelled for Jill to wake up, we peeled Noah’s clothes off, and had an exciting 4:30 am bath, both of us, while Jill cleaned up Noah’s room.

Around 5 am, just as the coffee finished brewing, Noah dozed off. So all three of us went back to bed until a little bit after 8 am. We slept through Noah’s phone date with Grandma, but fortunately, she was flexible and willing to sing and chat with Noah later.

At 9:30 am, someone started trying to fax us. They were extremely persistent, and on the 4th try I yelled, “STOP IT” into the phone.

Jill decided after that to plug in the fax machine. Unfortunately, she momentarily forgot how mobile Noah is, and I was making toast and not watching him either. As she plugged in the fax machine, Noah pulled over her cup of coffee, coating himself.

Miraculously, he missed his shirt, soaking only his pants and feet and the floor. We skipped the second bath; he just smells like hazelnut coffee today.

And even though it became obvious that he was still exhausted (eye-rubbing, crying for no apparent reason, clingy as hell), Noah declined to fall asleep again.

So 10 minutes ago, I sent him out for a walk with Jill.

Doesn’t he look cute? Isn’t that a fabulous hat?

Bye Mommy

  1. …cuter still that he’s waving bye-bye…as Mommy goes down for her *own* nap.

  2. Don’t I wish? It was too cold for a long walk after all.

I did get a shower, but Noah napped for shit all day. This afternoon, we drove 45 minutes to a birthday party; he finally fell asleep 35 minutes into the drive. I got him out of the car seat and awake, only to read the sign on the Gymboree door, “Birthday Party cancelled due to illness.”

  3. arg. hope tomorrow is a better day. i think noah already internalized that saying “i’ll sleep when i’m dead.” he just hasn’t quite realized that maybe his mommies want to get a few winks of shuteye in this lifetime.

he looks adorable in that hat, i’m glad he likes it. (or at least he seems to!)

  4. Wow. Wishing you better luck and a few winks today! At least the coffee wasn’t hot.

I don’t know whether to be relieved that we’re not alone or disheartened that napping battles don’t get easier.
