The Election Post (lightly edited)
Posted by Liza under Current Affairs, Opinion
A lot of my thoughts on the election wound up on the other blog.
But here, I’ll say this. I’m EXCITED that at least one state finally defeated a ballot initiative to ban same sex marriage! Thanks, Arizona! That’s huge and historic!
I think history will look back at this election and Arizona’s vote, and it will be one of those Major Events when you know that the tide was actually turning.
I still wish others had done the same. Especially Wisconsin.
I’m also EXCITED that the Democrats took control of both houses of Congress, and that Nancy Pelosi is going to be the first woman Speaker of the House!
(Can you imagine if somehow something happened to Bush and Cheney? Let’s not even say anything bad, maybe they just realize that this whole governing thing is not for them, and they run away together to an undisclosed location. Maybe Elvis is there too. In any event, they go away and so the Speaker of the House becomes the President. I think Pelosi would be an outstanding first woman President.)
And I’m EXCITED that my old pal Cory Mason was elected to the State Assembly in Wisconsin. It is both odd and delightful to now have 2 personal friends serving there, not to mention 2 other alumni from my high school (and one in the State Senate), and my Dad.
So it was a mostly exciting and wonderful election, with some very big exceptions, like the anti-gay initiatives (except in Arizona) and here in Georgia. (I do hate that I live in “the bright red spot on the otherwise blue election day.” My districts are all as blue as they come, but they’re also as powerless as they come.)

If it’s any consolation, I live in a place that ranges from pink to scarlet myself. At least I have furlough to the bluest of the blue spots, though — I am writing from B’s house in the heart of California District… okay, it’s not 8, it’s 9, but it’s right across the water from 8.

A lot of people abroad are also extatic about the American results.
I hope that the relationship between the States and Europe will improve as a result and that we (Europeans) will manage to convey that we don’t hate Americans but just dislike their president immensely.

I hope that the changes will allow the US to begin repairing the damage that this Administration has done to our relationships with other countries.
We had such an opening for building those relationships in the months after September 11, and it broke my heart to watch us squander it so aggressively. I think a lot of American people do still remember, and are still moved by the amazing show of support and sympathy that so many people around the world showed us, especially that day and week.

i think i heard on npr this morning that nancy pelosi is supporting murtha for speaker? if that’s true i want to throw up — not that i have anything against murtha, but what a frigging girl thing to do.

sorry, next time i’ll actually check the news before i throw around accusations of girliness. pelosi is supporting murtha for majority leader, not speaker.
