As Healthy as a Horse, and Almost as Big
Posted by Liza under The Real Live Boy
Noah had his 9 month well baby doctor’s visit today:
Height: 30.5″ (+95th percentile)
Weight: 20.5 lbs (50th percentile)
Head Circ: 18.5″ (90th percentile)
Yes, we have a string bean. A string bean with a big head.
(Note to anyone thinking of giving Noah clothes: an adjustable or open neck is a good thing, ie polo collars, full-shoulder width necks, snaps in the back. Regular t-shirt necks may get cut open with scissors.)
Overall, Noah was pronounced very healthy. And although we feel like he is already deep into stranger anxiety, the doctor promised that it would get worse, probably not peaking for another 6 months. Or more.
Lucky he’s a pretty social kid. And that mommy is strong.
The doctor also agreed that our concerns about how much sleep Noah is getting (or not) are appropriate concerns, and recommended that we either get the current day care to work with us on it, or consider changing to a day care that has a more scheduled nap time routine.
According to the doctor, babies Noah’s age should be getting 13-14 hours/day of sleep. Noah is getting more like 12.

On behalf of your extended family, we are thrilled and deeply excited to experience heightened “Stranger Anxiety” over the Christmas Holiday in Milwaukee… I cannot imagine a more relaxing vacation.

Think of it as a preview of coming attractions!

Really, though, it isn’t a static thing.
What it means is that it takes Noah awhile to warm up to people he doesn’t know or hasn’t seen in awhile.
By the time you and Jason get to Milwaukee, Noah should be good with Grandma & Grandpa’s house. So long as he can leap into my arms whenever he wants to. We’re starting to call him Velcro Boy.

Sounds like a happy, healthy baby boy.
About the napping: oy. Do you think that Noah’s school will support you and Jill in trying to establish a more regular nap routine for Noah? Or with the steady turn-around at the school, do you think that that’s causing some of Noah’s non-sleeping/anxiety? Or is it just a case of No-Nap-Noah?
Henry’s younger, but we can go a week with a No Nap Henry. He only naps a total of about 1 hour every day. 1.5 if we’re lucky. But he sleeps the night, so I’ve picked my battle. If he doesn’t nap, it’s fine as long as he sleeps the night.

Have you tried a nice healthy slug or two of bourbon just before breastfeeding?

Remember that he’s growing, healthy and happy. At least, that’s what I keep trying to tell myself at 2 a.m., 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., and during the screaming when we try for afternoon nap. I feel for ya, babe.

Yay, Mr. Big Boy Noah!
When you hit on the magical sleep solution, let me know. We’re doing another 20-minute CIO session night tonight after getting up with him 5 (yes, FIVE!!!) times last night.

so more like a lollipop, then? (string bean with a big head)

Yes, a lollipop!
Reno, I think I might feel better about Noah’s sleeping, or not, after a couple of shots, BUT he’s become a very wiggly nurser, especially when he’s tired. If I were drunk, I’m afraid I might not catch him fast enough.
I think MOST of the problem is that there’s too much interesting stuff going on to look at when he’s at school, so he doesn’t really want to nap.
On top of that, just before he completely crashes, like 1-2 minutes before, Noah often cries or yelps or thrashes around. (Fun while nursing, let me tell you!) I think they might be picking him up when he does that, so his noisemaking doesn’t wake up the other babies.
