Grrr. Comment Spam
Posted by Liza under Personal
I am so sick of comment spam.
Really. None of us is looking for a video on that, or that either. (Ewww! I don’t even want to read a URL about that.) And if you’re looking for those videos, I suspect you can find them yourself; you don’t need to look here.
Both v**g*a and hoo**a seem like bad ideas for me, and, I suspect, most of you. I don’t think those are real designer handbags, I’m not going to buy my insurance from a link in someone’s blog comments, and what is UP with all this weird spam in Italian? With Israeli URLs???
I erase about 200 comment spams per day here, and the other blog gets about the same. Fortunately, the rest of the team has taken on erasing spam too.
Anyone have a blog anti-spam solution they love?
(Note, a live hyperlink will cause your comment to get stuck in the moderation queue, probably even if you’ve commented before. Otherwise, you too would have to see about 25% of my comment spam.)

another blogger i read was having the same problem and i think what she did to stop it was move her blog from moveable type to wordpress.

Do you have the Akismet plugin turned on in WordPress? It’s not a perfect solution, but it does cut down on the influx. Also, the more spam you add to it, the more it “learns” what to filter, so it only gets better.

I second Dana’s suggestion of Akismet. You do have to go through what it catches, though, because sometimes it works a little too well and filters out actual comments.

I don’t know if it works for blogs, but my outlook has a new sp*m filter from cloudmark desktop - it’s awesome - it’s only like 39 bucks a year, adn you get a free trial offer - it saves me about 20 minutes at the top of my day - heaven.
