(I mean really, could you resist writing that title?)
Today, after months of discussion and planning, my company launched a Blog Directory, including employee personal blogs.
Listing in the directory was entirely voluntary, and as you might expect, I volunteered.
Interesting items:
- The listing is a mix of techie blogs, personal blogs, professional blogs, and niche blogs in other niches
- The employees are from all over the company, and at a range of levels, all the way up to EVP
- If there are other women bloggers at the company, they’d rather not have it be known. I was the only one to volunteer to be listed. (Of course there are others! But where and who are they?)
I already knew there were work people who read my blog (Hi Mike! Hi Fay!) but now, I think it’s safe to assume there will be more. I don’t *think* that’s going to change how I write, but if you notice something, drop me a note or leave a comment?
Oh yeah, how could I forget this? I’m even in the official announcement! (You knew that I was out at work, right?)

that’s really cool. i suppose being an internet company your workplace is a lot more blog-friendly than most. maybe i’m just paranoid, but i feel like i could get fired for having a blog, even though i’ve never revealed where i work or said anything remotely related to work, apart from the funshine stories (which relate funny stories about my co-workers without naming names). i’ve even considered removing the funshine stories thinking that they could get me fired. am i paranoid? scratch that, i’m definitely paranoid, but am I WRONG to be paranoid?

That’s pretty cool!
(I wonder how you can make the other ladies come out as bloggers?)

Jen, you probably aren’t *wrong* wrong to be paranoid. But as long as your blog postings don’t violate any external communication policies that apply to you, the blog shouldn’t be a firing issue.
That said, you might want to check your employer’s web site to see if there are any applicable policies posted. For some people insider trading policies are a big issue; I don’t want to theorize about yours for fear of outing you.

yeah, i know what you are getting at. i don’t think that would be a problem. i never talk about work, and i never talk about anything within the subject matter of my work (i.e. i wouldn’t even talk about the entire subject of taxes if i worked for the IRS) with one exception that seemed harmless at the time, but now i’m thinking i should go take down that post!

It\’s all great! More people SHOULD read your blog - it\’s great. BUT babe, we need to get a color photo over to those earthlinkians. As my mom used to say \”You\’re too lovely to (fill in the blank)that photo.\”
Happy toddlerhood. AND I\’m linking to a rumination of mine on writing and my own (still unconquered) timidity about how much to tell - especially about other people\’s lives. There\’s even a quote from Michael Chabon.
It\’s here.

Sorry for the formatting peculiarity in Cindy’s comment. When she wrote it, it looked totally normal. When I edited the link, it did all those strange things with the backslashes, which I never seem to be able to fix.
Jen, if you want to work up some funshine paranoia, you might want to read this: http://www.dooce.com/about.html
