Go Noahiego Go
Posted by Liza under The Real Live Boy, Are you bored yet?
Jill’s parents very kindly sent a check for Noah’s birthday, with instructions that we get a toy or toys that he would enjoy. Yesterday, we finally managed it!

In addition to this extremely exciting “Go Diego Go” push/ride car, Noah also got a “tot bowling” set with six lightweight pins that have little colorful balls inside. Unfortunately, the bowling ball is NOT indoor friendly, so it’s been tucked away for now. Noah can bowl with his basketball.
Anyway, Noah thinks this car is the best. It has a zillion buttons and bits that move and make noise — mostly music, some commentary. It took nearly 10 minutes of attempts to distract him, 4 or 5 hours after he first saw it, before we could remove him from the car to change a poopy diaper.
(We are in diaper changing hell. It seems to go better if we don’t interrupt whatever he’s doing to change him. But shrieking, tears, fury, and escape attempts are pretty much standard at this point. Maybe 50% of the time he will eventually settle down if provided a sufficiently interesting distraction. Your suggestions are welcome!)

If you find a solution to the diaper changing hell let me know. We go through it daily too. It is awful! Hopefully it is just a phase. Sometimes changing the location of the diaper exchange helps ours. Other times we distract with anything that will work.

I was really hoping that it got better as the kids got older…but *sigh* I guess not.
Also? Henry got a push/ride on Little People bus for his first birthday. He LUUUURVES it!

You just need to change him more often, as soon as the diaper is wet or poopy. Eventually, he’ll realize that there’s a difference between, shall we say, new and used diapers, and he’ll prefer the new. Cloth helps a lot with this because they simply need to be changed more often. Kids in cloth tend to be more in tune with what their bodies do and are interested in being dry.

I think everyone here is overlooking the obvious solution: Exorcism.
I mean, check out the photo! That kid is possessed! Exorcise the demons, and I bet the diaper problems clear right up.

This is a pretty basic suggestion, but find/purchase something that he thinks is REALLY cool and then only let him handle and play with it during diaper change. It’s a “diaper change” toy and that’s it. It gets a special place tucked in with the diapers and he’s never allowed to have it at any other time. For my youngest, it was a pair of prescription glasses from the thrift store..lol

Hi! De-lurking to ask you a question (unrelated to this post). May I e-mail you? I am fellow Atlantan, and I have some info about potential developments in gay adoption in Georgia. Love your blog, by the way!

COOL new car. I’m jealous on behalf of Joaquin.
We’re currently going through diaper changing hell too — it’s a phase all my kids have gone through. Right now I just pin him down and get it done as quickly as possible despite the screams of protest.
