We bought a new car this weekend. By we I mean Jill. And by new I mean vintage. 1979, to be specific. A 1979 Trans Am, with t-tops. (Kind of inverse sunroof panels.)
It currently lives, conveniently enough, in Milwaukee. Where we are going after BlogHer. Yes, it was purchased on eBay.
I haven’t blogged about Jill’s interest in classic cars before, mostly because I couldn’t figure out what to say, or how to say it that didn’t sound like Jill was crazy. Or at least like I thought she was crazy.
I don’t think Jill is crazy.
I don’t understand the sudden interest in classic cars — the first time I heard about it was earlier this summer. And I have to be honest, I wish she would have taken a car class and hung out at car shows for six months or a year before buying one herself. I’m stressed about the money. Especially while we’re trying to sort out this whole “have another baby” thing. She has a plan, and it makes sense and should work, but I’m still tense about it.
The thing is, Jill got really passionate and driven about this, and it happened quickly. It’s the first thing I’ve seen her that driven about since we left DC.
I miss seeing her determined, the way she was about theater and developing her skill as an actor. I hope this feeds that same fire and excitement.
I wish I shared it more. At least with theater, there were shows I enjoyed seeing with her, and we could have lively discussions about plays and acting.
With cars, I’m more of an “it’s blue” girl. I don’t know anything, and I’m having a hard time generating much excitement. I’m happy for Jill, but this is so not my thing. The best I can really muster is driving around with her in it.
(Hopefully our new Cosco Scenara will fit in the back seat.)

ok. a little known fact about ME – a ’79 T-Top Trans Am in Turquoise Metallic was my 1st dream car at about age 7. A kid on my soccer team’s Dad had one and I was SO jealous!!
T-tops are the greatest-its a convertible without all the drama..
Oh, my wife is going to be so jealous. She’s still a bit heartbroken that she had to let her TA go last year.
Now she has her sights set on 2009, when the new TA release is rumored to be coming.
Hawt car.
Cars aren’t my thing either, Liza. But Andy says he totally approves of Jill’s purchase, and wonders which of you is “Smokey” and which of you is “The Bandit”.
That is AWESOME!
Sweet ride!
I hope Madelaine and I get a chance to see it when you’re in town. You should drive it to the reunion!
My first car was a 1963 Dodge Polara in great condition, with a V-8 engine and push button transmission. It was white with baby blue interior. It was cool, but definitely not ’79-TA-with-T Top-cool.
So I fully expected to not have an opinion about the car. But damn, it looks awesome.
Do I get to meet the car along with the child and the wife?
Like Isabel, I’m not at all expecting to have any sort of reaction to The Car, because I’m like you “Um, it runs?”
But seriously? Hott ride, Jill.
hot car, love it! you should definitely drive it to the reunion!
personally, my dream car is 1961-63 (i’ll take any of those years) ford thunderbird convertible, but i don’t understand how anyone can possibly NOT understand the awesomeness of an american-made muscle car.
also, if you can only choose one, it’s a much better investment than a second kid.
Nice car, Jill. Can’t wait to see some pics of Noah stylin’ around in it (in the backseat, secure in his carseat, of course).
