I’m not going to get into a lot of detail here, but at the same time, I can’t not blog about this.
Some of you know that the company I work for has been downsizing — significantly — over the past year.
The latest round of layoffs came through today. I was on the list.
I’ll still be working through the end of the summer, and the severance package is such that we are not panicking. But it is still VERY stressful and not at all how I envisioned my maternity leave.

This sucks! All I can tell you is that things seem to work out; it’s the waiting for them to do so that’s such a bitch. Let your friends fuss over you (we will). I have lots more comforting things to share later but for now you probably just want to be able to breathe. So breathe. And feel the love.
Wow. Sorry.
as your fellow smithie, aol, AND chestnut grover-er – i can assure that you will find another great job and be able to enjoy your maternity leave:-) the happiness of your new arrival will bring a great new opportunity! and come on, you are a SMITHIE!!
Who the hell lays off an employee who is EFFING PREGNANT?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jesus hon! I’m sorry to hear that.
Holy helllll!
omfg!
ditto *everything* above.
Oh, Liza! I can’t imagine how shocking this news was. But I’m so glad that at least a severance package was involved, and that you at least have a job through the summer, so you have a little time to plan your next step.
We are here for you!
Oh honey. I am so so sorry.
xo
Dang! Well, you knew the train had to stop sometime, but *ditto* above – who lets go of a pregnant woman? Get me a lawyer, oh wait…
‘hmmm!
In the end, change is good (once you get past the initial SHOCK). You’ve got a nice off-ramp and a known departure date. With luck, the stock will bounce w/in your 90-day exercise window!
Best of luck!

I keep swearing outloud so I don’t type the obscenities here. I don’t know what to tell you. If you want to talk, email/call me. I’m sorry and I’m sorry. UGH.
I am with Jill on the who lays off a pregnant woman comment. Sorry to hear!!!
Call when you feel like talking, or venting, or bouncing around ideas. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help, including whether I should start getting in touch with lawyer friends in our area, getting lists of state or federal jobs here that might be open, etc.
Love, Mom
Ohhhhhh Liza. I’m so sorry!! I can’t even imagine what you guys must be going through right now.
Can I mimic Jill? Who in the living HELL lays off a pregnant woman!?
I don’t even know what to say, Liza. I am so sorry to hear this. It probably feels like the wind has been knocked out of you, but once you are able to breathe again, you will find other opportunities. And who knows- maybe this is a blessing in disguise and you will find an even better work situation after.
You’re quite a catch and they’re stupid to let you go (my inner 2-year old had to speak up).
Hi Liza,
I am so sorry to read this. I hope that this will open up new opportunities for you. I especially wish for you that you’ll still be able to enjoy your time with Esmerelda when she comes. You are definitely in my thoughts.
Natalie
I’m so sorry, hon.
Ditto to all above. You’ve got a killer resume, so now it’s all about picking where you want to live, whether that remains Atlanta or becomes somewhere else, and going for it.
I’m here too if you need to talk.
Love to all,
c
Hi Liza. How upsetting. Dang! Since you’ll probably head over to a bookstore (possibly to browse) you can look up a wonderful book called “Setting Your Genius Free” by Dick Richards. It helped me a lot a few years ago when I was trying to figure out what my next steps. Anyway, sorry to hear this rotten news. -Monica
I am so sorry, Liza. How incredibly shitty–overall and the timing of it.
